BTEC Tech Award in Sport

What is this course and is it right for me?

The BTEC Tech award in Sport is for learners who enjoy Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport but want to acquire theoretical knowledge and technical skills through vocational contexts by exploring areas such as the body systems, nutrition, improving fitness and leadership.

The vocational context provides a job-related qualification and understanding that prepares learners to enter an area of work they are interested in or to progress on to further study Post-16. It is right for you if you have a lively and enquiring mind, an interest in the sport and leisure industry, a willingness to explore new ideas and an ability to communicate your ideas effectively. Students who are organised and strong in project and assignment based work achieve well on this course.

What is the course structure?

All students will complete the following components:

  • Preparing Participants to take part in Sport and Physical activity - this includes the different types of physical activity and providers, the needs of participants, barriers to participation and ways to overcome these barriers. Equipment and technology required to take part in sport is also included. Learners will also develop an applied understanding of physiology and anatomy as they learn how to plan and deliver a warm up to prepare participants to take part in sport and physical activity.

How is the course assessed?

All components are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.

Other components are assessed through coursework completion and standardisation.

There are no cost implications for this course.

What courses or employment can I progress to at the end of my course?

The BTEC Tech award in Sport can provide a suitable foundation for further study within the sector through progression on to qualifications such as the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Nationals in Sport and Sport and Exercise Sciences and IB Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences.

Alternatively, learners can progress to NVQs such as Activity Leadership or Coaching, Teaching and Instructing. The underpinning knowledge, practical and vocational skills learnt on the BTEC Tech award in Sport will enhance and support the progression to a competency-based course.
