KES Students...

PE Learning Journey

Key Stage 3

All students will have access to a positive experience of physical education, physical activity and sport to help promote and develop a lifelong habit of participation that focusses on developing the knowledge and understanding of health and fitness and the importance of these into adulthood.

 Active participation in physical education, physical activity and sport leads to the development of resilience, determination and self-belief, building character, instilling values and virtues such as friendships and fair play.

The key processes for this programme of study for Yr 7 and 8 are based around ME in PE:

  • Thinking ME
  •  Physical ME
  • Social ME
  • Personal ME

 Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 students continue with Core PE lessons. These lessons are designed to encourage students to engage in more complex and demanding physical activities in an effective and enjoyable manner. The purpose of this is to promote and develop a lifelong habit of participation that focuses on developing the knowledge and understanding of health and fitness and the importance of these into adulthood. 

Our curriculum remains broad and balanced, offering a wide range of activities to maintain interest, curiosity and lead to competence in participation. Activities may be similar to those in Key Stage 3 but additional activities will also be introduced. We aim to give students the opportunity to explore different roles within their activities such as performer, coach, leader and official to help better their experience.

 

BTEC Tech Sport - Key Stage 4 Option 

In addition to Core PElessons, students have the opportunity to study BTEC Level 1 / Level 2 Tech Award in Sport. This pathway is suited to highly motivated sporting students who partake in extra-curricular activities or play regular sport outside of school or those who would like to discover a vocational aspect of our subject.

The following areas are studied:

1. Preparing participants to take part in sport and physical activity  - Learners will explore the different types and provision of sport and physical activity available for different types of participants, barriers to participation and ways to overcome these barriers to increase participation in sport and physical activity.

2. Taking part and improving other participants sporting performance - Learners will investigate the components of fitness and their effect on performance, take part in practical sport, explore the role of officials in sport and learn to apply methods and sporting drills to improve other participants’ sporting performance.

3. Developing fitness to improve other participants’ performance in sport and physical activity - Learners will be introduced to and develop an understanding of the importance of fitness and the different types of fitness for performance in sport and physical activity. They will also develop an understanding of the body and fitness testing.

Key Stage 5

In Key Stage 5 students can choose to study the Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport and IB Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences.

The focus in the BTEC Sport course is on embedding vocational content that encourages students to go into careers in sport, physical activity and fitness. We explore detailed information on how to take a client and lead them through a training programme and partake in specific analysis of performance 

Each unit gives students a flavour of what a career in sport activity, fitness training, coaching, physio, nutritional analysis, business in sport etc. could be like.Each unit gives students a flavour of what a career in sport activity, fitness training, coaching, physio, nutritional analysis, business in sport etc. could be like.

Students gain an understanding of current affairs in sport and physical activity. We promote cultural understanding through knowledge of different sports and how they are promoted in different countries. 

Through IB Sport, Exercise and Health Science students apply science to the study of sport. Topics covered include:

  • Musculoskeletal Anatomy
  • Cardio-respiratory exercise physiology
  • Nutrition and energy systems
  • Movement analysis
  • Skill in Sport
  • Measurement and evaluation of human performance.
