On Wednes­day 16th Novem­ber King Ethel­bert School cel­e­brated the suc­cess and achieve­ment of the last aca­d­e­mic year at their annual Pre­sen­ta­tion After­noon at the Win­ter Gar­dens. All stu­dents from the school attend this event to cel­e­brate together what King Ethel­bert School has achieved. Mrs Willis, the Deputy Head­teacher, said “We cel­e­brate suc­cess at every level at our school and every­body is part of the school’s con­tin­ued success”.

Par­ents, spe­cial guests and gov­er­nors of the school joined the stu­dents in what was a very inspir­ing after­noon. Karen Eslea was the guest speaker. Karen is the Head of Learn­ing and Vis­i­tor Expe­ri­ence at the Turner Contemporary.

The Head­teacher, Kate Greig, spoke about the fan­tas­tic year King Ethel­bert had. This was reflected in the 6th form results with the 90% pass rate with top grades in the IBCP pro­gramme. Many stu­dents achieved in excess of 500 UCAS points, with73% going on to Uni­ver­sity. Addi­tion­ally, 63% of the stu­dents from last year’s Year 11 gained 5 A*-C GCSE grades includ­ing Eng­lish and Maths which made King Ethel­bert the high­est achiev­ing non-​selective school in Thanet for the 4th year run­ning. Ms Greig talked of the suc­cess the school has had across the nation with the work being done with the Royal Shake­speare Com­pany includ­ing the school being fea­tured on the BBC Richard Dim­bleby Lec­ture, “this has led to con­tact being made with coun­tries across the world….who have heard the name of King Ethel­bert and want to be part of what we do.” King Ethel­bert was made a world school in May and the suc­cess the school has had this year has just grown and grown. “This year we won the national Busi­ness of Enter­prise com­pe­ti­tion and the Kent Award for the Lit­er­acy School of the year.” said Miss Greig. She also went on to say “I want King Ethel­bert to be a school to be talked about ….because our young peo­ple absolutely deserve it. They rep­re­sent every­thing that is great in the next gen­er­a­tion and we are very proud of them.”

Stu­dents won prizes in all year groups from aca­d­e­mic suc­cess to prizes for endeav­our and courage. The stu­dents also pro­vided the enter­tain­ment with three bril­liant musi­cal per­for­mances from stu­dents across the school. One par­ent com­mented “The per­for­mances were so pro­fes­sional — the singing was amaz­ing and mov­ing — I had a tear in my eye”.

Head Boy Joe Marsh opened the event with the Chair of Gov­er­nors, Dr Vir­ginia Austin, and Head Girl Ellie Jo Corn­wall rounded off the after­noon with a thank you to every­one for mak­ing the event so inspi­ra­tional and so enjoy­able.
