On Wednesday 16th November King Ethelbert School celebrated the success and achievement of the last academic year at their annual Presentation Afternoon at the Winter Gardens. All students from the school attend this event to celebrate together what King Ethelbert School has achieved. Mrs Willis, the Deputy Headteacher, said “We celebrate success at every level at our school and everybody is part of the school’s continued success”.
Parents, special guests and governors of the school joined the students in what was a very inspiring afternoon. Karen Eslea was the guest speaker. Karen is the Head of Learning and Visitor Experience at the Turner Contemporary.
The Headteacher, Kate Greig, spoke about the fantastic year King Ethelbert had. This was reflected in the 6th form results with the 90% pass rate with top grades in the IBCP programme. Many students achieved in excess of 500 UCAS points, with73% going on to University. Additionally, 63% of the students from last year’s Year 11 gained 5 A*-C GCSE grades including English and Maths which made King Ethelbert the highest achieving non-selective school in Thanet for the 4th year running. Ms Greig talked of the success the school has had across the nation with the work being done with the Royal Shakespeare Company including the school being featured on the BBC Richard Dimbleby Lecture, “this has led to contact being made with countries across the world….who have heard the name of King Ethelbert and want to be part of what we do.” King Ethelbert was made a world school in May and the success the school has had this year has just grown and grown. “This year we won the national Business of Enterprise competition and the Kent Award for the Literacy School of the year.” said Miss Greig. She also went on to say “I want King Ethelbert to be a school to be talked about ….because our young people absolutely deserve it. They represent everything that is great in the next generation and we are very proud of them.”
Students won prizes in all year groups from academic success to prizes for endeavour and courage. The students also provided the entertainment with three brilliant musical performances from students across the school. One parent commented “The performances were so professional — the singing was amazing and moving — I had a tear in my eye”.
