It is with great sad­ness that we have learnt of the death of one of our year 10 stu­dents, Char­lie Richard­son, who died this week­end fol­low­ing a road traf­fic acci­dent on Fri­day night.

Char­lie was a very impor­tant, much loved mem­ber of our school fam­ily and we are dev­as­tated by this tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with his fam­ily at this dread­ful time. Char­lie was a witty, lively, charm­ing boy who always had a huge smile on his face. He was also some­one who had those extra spe­cial human attrib­utes – he was kind, gen­er­ous and com­pletely loyal. We are all going to miss him dread­fully – his death is a huge loss to our whole school.

We had a whole school assem­bly this morn­ing with all stu­dents and staff – it was very impor­tant for us all to come together as a com­mu­nity to share our immense sor­row and grief.

We will be hold­ing a Cel­e­bra­tion of Life assem­bly for Char­lie in school and we will also be col­lect­ing money so that we can ded­i­cate some last­ing memo­r­ial in King Ethel­bert so that Char­lie will always be remem­bered by us all.

On Wednes­day 25^th Novem­ber King Ethel­bert School cel­e­brated the suc­cess and achieve­ment of the last aca­d­e­mic year at their annual Pre­sen­ta­tion After­noon at the Win­ter Gar­dens. All stu­dents from the school attend this event to cel­e­brate together what King Ethel­bert School has achieved. Mrs Willis, the Deputy Head­teacher, said “We cel­e­brate suc­cess at every level at our school and every­body is part of the school’s con­tin­ued success”.

Par­ents, spe­cial guests and gov­er­nors of the school joined the stu­dents in what was a very inspir­ing after­noon. Mark Everett was the guest speaker. Mark is the Direc­tor of the Mar­lowe The­atre and works with the school in pro­vid­ing won­der­ful enrich­ment and aspi­ra­tional oppor­tu­ni­ties for stu­dents at King Ethel­bert, which adds to their part­ner­ship work with the Royal Shake­speare Com­pany. Mark spoke to the stu­dents about embrac­ing new oppor­tu­ni­ties, inspir­ing them to aim high and believe that all things are possible.

The Head­teacher, Kate Greig, spoke about the fan­tas­tic year King Ethel­bert had. This was reflected in the 6^th form results by the con­tin­ued unblem­ished record of 100% pass rate in the IBCP pro­gramme with a record num­ber of dis­tinc­tion* grades. Addi­tion­ally, 53% of the stu­dents from last year’s Year 11 gained 5 A*-C GCSE grades includ­ing Eng­lish and Maths which made King Ethel­bert the high­est achiev­ing non-​selective school in Thanet for the 3^rd year run­ning. She talked about the cul­ture of the school and the sense of team as every­one had a part to play in the suc­cess of the school. “When every­one helps, every­one suc­ceeds and this has never been so evi­dent as it is right now at King Ethel­bert School. We are all increas­ingly proud of the shared col­lec­tive respon­si­bil­ity we have – all of us share the same goal, to make Thanet a cen­tre for excel­lent, world class education.”

Get­ting behind the scenes

KS4 stu­dent under­tak­ing a BTEC Music Qual­i­fi­ca­tion vis­ited the Mar­lowe The­atre as part of their stud­ies focus­ing on the music indus­try. Hav­ing the oppor­tu­nity to go behind the scenes of the largest the­atre in Kent when they were in the throws of set­ting up for a Water­boys gig that evening was very for­tu­nate, and with a bril­liant guide in the form of the Tech­ni­cal Direc­tor at the the­atre as were able to ask loads of ques­tions about how venues oper­ate, pro­mo­tion, mar­ket­ing and even the ‘crazy’ rid­ers that some artists insist upon when they per­form. We vis­ited all cor­ners of the the­atre from the very depths to the high­est point and even hav­ing a go work­ing the spot­lights. We also had a sneaky peek at the cast of the Christ­mas pan­tomine in rehearsals in the stu­dio get­ting the chance to say hi to CBee­bies Mr Maker and ‘Roxy’ from Eas­t­en­ders. All in all, an excel­lent day pro­vid­ing a mas­sive insight into every­thing that goes into mak­ing a live pro­duc­tion work.
