The BTEC Level 3 Science students visited the Kent Resource Centre located on the Kent Science Park in Sittingbourne. It offered them the opportunity to experience the practical techniques associated with the theory learned in class. Individually they carried out Aspirin synthesis and different techniques to estimate the purity of the Aspirin made. The techniques that were used varied, these included: pH testing, melting point determination, High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Infrared Spectroscopy. The students also conducted a paternity test using gel electrophoresis technique, looking at DNA fragments from a mother, child and two potential fathers. These practical activities gave our students the opportunity to gain first hand experience of using laboratory instruments and an insight into the world of practical science and what it is like to work in a laboratory setting. With guidance from the laboratory staff at the Resource Centre the students found this experience invaluable and helped make the procedures easy to understand and enjoyable. Overall, the day was enjoyed by all and they all gained some experience in this field of work for the future.
